Edward, have you seen this morning's papers? If not I suggest you do, immediately.

Wed 8th August '01 - 08.41am, from Sir Art:

Edward - I'm still waiting for you to get back to me - Art Chorlton.

Wed 8th August '01 - 10.15am:

Have just been to the shop and got a paper:

'Writer and raconteur Aubrey O'Gough (65) today launched a bitter personal attack on president of Channel Z Television, Sir Art Chorlton. The popular author, and screenwriter of such landmark television series as 'The Maurice Protocol' and 'A Pick Of Pickled Peppers 2' was filming a wine commercial at his vineyard in Spain when he made the surprise attack.

'Referring to the kidnapping of Mave Parker (69), which still engulfs the small satellite TV station, he said, 'The stand off between Channel Z and those disgraceful protestors has clearly gone on for far too long. People want to see an end to it. The public at large do, and it's their views that should count.' He cited a recent opinion poll in which 82% of those polled expressed a desire for the ransom to be paid, with 10% showing no preference either way, and 8% wanting Mrs.Parker to try to improvise her own escape plan.

'O'Gough continued, 'Don't forget there is an innocent party in all this, and Mrs.Parker's entire family are being ground through an emotional windmill. It's time to stop the pensioner's misery. Enough is enough; Sir Art Chorlton must pay the ransom.' Sipping deeply from a glass of freshly squeezed orange and mango juice, O'Gough continued to reel off a list of complaints about how the station's president has been mishandling the crisis. 'I have known Sir Art Chorlton for...a long time - and in all that time he has never, I don't think, given me such cause to question his judgement.' O'Gough went on to call Sir Art 'a prize plum' for the way he was handling events.

'A little-known group calling themselves The National Bird & Wildlife League has been holding Mrs.Parker for over a month now, and issued a ransom demand on July 10th for $500,000. It is not clear what the motive is for the kidnapping or why they have targetted Mrs.Parker, who works as a cleaner at the Channel Z Television studios in Milford, Derbyshire.

'Station Chief Michael Macintyre was today unable to comment due to undisclosed 'personal reasons'. He has repeatedly claimed that he is unable to meet the demands of the ransom. Last week he issued a statement in which he said, 'There is no way I will be allowed by our board or president to pay that amount.' He has been quoted recently in a tabloid newspaper as saying, 'The whole thing's pretty ridiculous, isn't it, really? The things people expect of you.'

'It is this resigned attitude expressed by the station's hierarchy that seems to have angered O'Gough the most. Ironically, his latest television series, 'Chris - the Christopher Columbus Story' is currently in post-production at Channel Z, having cost the station an unprecedented amount to film. It is unclear why O'Gough would want to rock the boat on this issue. Sir Art Chorlton was today thought to be considering a meeting with the author in an attempt to iron out their differences. In the meantime it seems that Mave Parker will be spending another night in with her kidnappers. It is understood that the Police are unwilling to intervene at this stage, although they are being kept informed of events.

'When asked for his feelings towards Mave Parker, who is the second oldest employee at Channel Z, and spoken highly of by most staff and visitors alike, according to her colleague Rodney Clambake, O'Gough became misty-eyed, 'I feel for her,' he said, 'As if she were my own mother. I think we're all very concerned, aren't we? Mrs.Parker lacks her youth, and her health is reputedly not good. She is said by her friends to feel the cold in winter.' The interview ended when the director of the commercial called O'Gough back to the makeshift studio, on a precipice overlooking the author's expansive vineyard, to shoot more takes of the commercial, believed to be for his 'Vintage Aubrey' range of fine wines.'

Are you going to meet him then, sir?
