Mon 23rd July '01 - 20.27:
First day in my new job. I got there bright and early at 8 o'clock, to try and make a good impression, but it was all locked up. I went round to Alan and Petra's house (which is virtually next door) and rang the bell and Alan came down wearing just pyjama bottoms. He looked really angry about something. He told me to come back at 'three minutes to nine, not before' so I went for a quick walk round and about.
I spent the morning stacking wheels in the stockroom. I explained to Alan that I was well versed in the running of a mailroom and that maybe I could help out with more administrative procedures but he just, well, ignored what I was saying and carried on serving a customer.
We sold two bikes today. One to a young father type who said it was for his son (it was a kiddies bike), and a proper racing bike to this guy who didn't really say very much, but who I imagine would be in the Tour de France, or at least watch it on telly. That sort of thing.
Spent some time getting to know Petra. She seems really nice. She said that Alan has been away a lot lately and works too hard. Alan seemed really in a bad mood still when I tried to talk to him throughout the day. Oh well! I've asked him for a small advance on my wages but he says it'll be unlikely. So I won't get paid until mid-August now, which seems really, well, worrying. So please could you help, sir? I've spent loads on doing this work for you. I've given you all the receipts. Would it kill you to advance me at least a bit of the money? Sorry, I don't want to speak out of turn. But my landlord Mr Tideswell is going to be really annoyed.
Alan said he's going to train me up on the till tomorrow. I'm looking forward to that. I think I'm going to like working here. Although I do obviously miss Channel Z, where I really felt I belonged. Particularly under your mentorage, sir. Is that a word? I haven't heard from Olivia. I sent her a text message (I got her number from the personnel files you gave me). Hope she's OK. Sincerely - Ed.
