Sunday 12th August '01 - 22.46pm: I forgot to tell you, sir. Sam had rung while I was out this afternoon. She said they're coming back late tonight and that I can bring Hetty over tomorrow after work. Hetty actually spoke to Sam and she said that she sounded nice. Hetty seemed a bit more cheerful today when I got home. I would say more like her normal self, but I don't hardly know her so I'm not exactly sure what that normal self could be. Also I got a call from John's mum. Apparantly John has joined a pop band with some college youths. He's learning to play the bass. Well, John hasn't really got a musical note in his body as far as I know, but I guess you don't really need that for the bass, do you? Just to be able to keep the rhythm going and keep time. It's nice he'll be going out and meeting people. I'll probably pop over and see him this week and see how he's getting on. Anna keeps texting me, despite me having texted her back for her first text message. Is it really necessary to reply to every single one, sir? It seems a bit pointless. I could always tell her what happened with Philip as a text message, but it doesn't really seem right somehow. I guess I'll have to talk about it with her at some point. It was weird, it seemed as if the kid thought we were going to get married and have a baby or something - that day, probably - rather than just having a nice day out at the zoo together. I've got nothing against seeing Anna, but I can't see it getting as serious as all that. Anyway, my flat is suitable strictly for only a single person. Hang on, Hetty is coming in with a mug of tea for me. I hid the screen, as I think she was trying to view what I'd been writing. It's really none of her business anyway. She's got her own room downstairs (well, it's my lounge really). I'll be glad when I can get back to work at the bike shop tomorrow with Petra, and get on with the sale we've got on there. Then after that I can come back home and take Hetty to go and stay with Sam and Phil at their place. Monday 13th August '01 - 17.38pm: Do you know where Hetty is, sir? No sign of her, or her stuff here. She's just gone. I had a phone call just now from Sam saying that Hetty's not staying with them. What's going on? She can't come back here. Mr.Tideswell my landlord will fall off his perch if he finds out that I've had what amounts in actual fact to an illegal guest staying with me. He'd be well within his rights by law, as the legal landlord of this flat to ask me in short to quit his premises. I brought Hetty over this morning, right, but you refused to let me stay for your meeting. Why couldn't you let me come in with her? You've no idea how I felt when the door closed behind you both and you were gone. I want to find out what's going on. Haven't I earned a right to? I mean, after all I've done in terms of the legwork what has gone into this investigation and whole operation - not to mention putting up Hetty, who hasn't been the most grateful (or hygiene-conscious) of guests what I've ever had. I'm sorry sir, but you shouldn't leave me out of all this. Will you please email me, today please, and let me know what's happening? Thank you. I mean, it's only common courtesy. Saw John on the way back from the sandwich shop when I was getting my dinner. I asked him about the band he's in and he looked a bit ashamed. I said, "Come on, tell me all about it. How did you get involved?" He smiled awkwardly. Apparantly his mum had phoned up the mum of one of the guitarists and asked if they would be able to take John into the band, as he "must develop some kind of outside interest that doesn't involve glaring into a screen". As it happens the bassist had just walked out (as he was meant to be temperamental and was more into heavy rock than this group who favour Travis over The Smashing Pumpkins - whoever they may be). I think John is enjoying the challenge of learning to play a musical instrument for the first time, although it's hard to guage much from any of his mumbled utterances. He'll probably appreciate getting out of the house and away from his mum's moaning for a while. I know that Playstation 2 will always remain John's first love (and he enjoys chess; not that he's any good at that; he just enjoys sitting still for long periods of time). He said I can go and watch them rehearse some time. They apparantly rehearse in St.Osmund's church hall, in Bakersfield. I said, "What's the name of the band, John?" and he said, "The Icicle Brakes". Sounds a bit cool for John. Monday 13th August '01 - 20.25pm: It's O.K., sir, I've just had a phone call from Hetty. I'm sure she'll be fine staying with you and Lady Diane. She's told me to come up and see her this week. Is that alright? I've never been up to your house before. Well, I've never been invited before, so I never went.
