Thursday 9th August '01 - 18.09pm: I haven't seen anything on the telly today about the press conference, sir? Will it be in the papers tomorrow? Had a really good day at work today. Anna came in at lunchtime and we went for lunch at The Horse and Showground. I didn't have a drink, as I was working, but Anna had a Malibu and Coke. She bought me lunch (a cheddar cheese and pickle ploughmans, with plenty of pickled onions). It was delicious. I didn't ask her to, it just kind of happened. She said that she didn't come in yesterday because she had to take Felicity to the dentist. Apparantly the dentist was really pleased with Felicity's brushing technique, and how she was coming on with it, and gave her a sticker with a crocodile on it. As we were leaving the Horse and Showground Anna took my hand and said she'd had a good time on Tuesday night at the cinema. I was surprised when she took hold of my hand. She said she was apparantly worried because I hadn't looked like I was enjoying the film. I didn't think it was that obvious. Anyway, I explained that I had enjoyed being with her, and she told me I could pick the film the next time (so The Mummy Returns could be on the cards yet). I'd really like to go round to her house and see where she lives, and meet her children, although I don't know if that might all be a bit sudden at the moment. What do you think? Thursday 9th August '01 - 19.37pm: Just had a phone call from Hetty! She said she's been staying in a Youth Hostel near Carlisle since Tuesday night after hitching up there. I said, 'What on earth are you doing there, have you left the Twitcher's Nest?', and she said, 'Yes, I've left for good. I'm not going back. Can I come and stay with you for a while?' Well, I don't know how Mr Tideswell (my landlord) would react to me having a woman that was staying. I mean, she wouldn't be a rent payer, and I'm not really allowed to have guests overnight, so... I said I'd have to think about it. She sounded desperate. She said, 'I haven't forgotten you, Edward.' At this my stomach turned a bit funny. I said I'd get back to her and then she started crying. She told me that on Tuesday morning Aubrey announced that he was leaving the twitchers and going back to London, because he had an appearance to make on BBC Radio 4's 'Just A Minute' (which I like listening to), and he had to go because it had been booked in his diary for months. She said that after he left there was a kind of mourning that swept through the kidnappers - although he left Joaquin in charge of the nest. Apparantly many of the twitchers are terrified of being caught now that Aubrey has left. Someone claimed they were like a 'rudderless schooner', or something. Hetty told me that she hasn't got very much money left, and she can't go back to her parents because she feels she's crossed that bridge and there's a no-entry sign up there - a metaphorical one (or something - that's what she was coming out with). I said, 'Look, I'll talk to you in the morning,' because I thought she might have calmed down by then and be less emotional. I don't know what to do now. I mean, I want to help her but I can't see her moving in with me really. What shall I do, boss? |
