Old Monty's Field

Old Monty's Field. Treasure was discovered here in 1801 by some lucky mill children

Baldwin, Geoff -
Often bad-tempered head of the GETU Editors’ Union. Prized possession: a pair of scissors given to him by Boris Concert's wife in 1986.

Birchmore, Anna -
I only met Anna recently. Petra set us up (she's one of her friends) and we went to The Coffee Pot in Shepherdsfield to see a film to do with Virginia Woolf. It was a bit long. Her favourite actor is Richard Burton, while I prefer spy thrillers.

Anna is really nice, blonde (but it's bleached), but she is divorced, 34, and has two children, Philip - who's ten - and Felicity - who's seven. I haven't met them. I'm not ruling anything out yet.

Carter, Alan -
My boss at 'Alan's Cycle Shop,' in Main Road, Shepherdsfield. I think he started the business up from nothing. He is OK, usually in a sort of funny mood - I can't really describe it. He doesn't seem all that happy in life.

Carter, Petra -
Petra is really good to work with. She owns the business along with her husband Alan. She is, I would say, about 37-ish. She still looks alright on it though. She's not too old looking. She's quite nice.

She is a really good cook, and particularly makes nice cakes. I'm glad Petra works at the shop too as Alan is too serious really. Me and Petra have a good laugh most of the time when we're working in the shop. Sometimes she is a bit intense.

Catanzaro, Jake -
Brother of Sandy (below). He is the disgraced former editor of a daily regional newspaper. He is balding, with a rather bitter outlook on life. I'm not saying that the two things are connected as they aren't. I know that you are proud of your polished head, Sir Art. And who am I to take that away from you?

Catanzaro, Sandy -
An up and coming reporter. Works for the Cumbria Advertiser in Kendal. This blonde is definitely not dumb. Sandy and her brother hail from Chicago, IL (Illinois - IL is the post code I think). She is devoted to her brother. Like a dog with the scent of a rotting bone she pursues her cases, er, 'doggedly'.

Chong, Teri -
A famous Australian singer. She sings the theme tune to Turbulence - 'Flying Away.' She has quite a dramatic performing style. At a recent concert in Stockholm three people had to be taken to hospital suffering from shock when she leapt into the audience unexpectedly, during a version of 'Bright Eyes.'

Corvell, Desmond -
A partner in the investment firm of 'Plum, Plum & Corvell'. At 58 years old he is by far the junior partner.

Destiny Moore, Fenella -
Olivia’s mother. A glamorous lady, married to Sir Peter Moore. She is the MD of an international furniture conglomeration, based near Heathrow. Olivia is the younger of two daughters, the other being Carla, who is in Japan for two years on a British Furniture Committee foreign exchange programme.

DuBrie, John -
As well as being Michael’s rival in love, John is the father of Olivia's unborn child. He is a financier at the firm of 'Plum, Plum and Corvell' and hopes to soon become a junior partner. His hobbies include all-night Monopoly parties, and horse-riding. Proud owner of a whippet called Harry.

Ellison, John -
A jobless youth who is one of my closest friends. Like me, John lives in Bakersfield. He is 17 years old and lives with his mum and dad. I'm always encouraging him to go out and do something but his closest attachment remains to his Playstation. John's favourite TV programme is 'The Weakest Link.'

Hodges, Jim -
A man I met on the coach when I went to the Lake District recently. He said that he had once lived as a hermit on a patch of waste ground in the Lakes. Nobody had minded, he said. Everyone was very reasonable about it. He just did his own thing, and people left him alone. I asked him what had been the turning point in deciding to stop being a hermit. He paused, then looked me straight in the eye and said, 'I didn't like the hours.'

Then he started laughing for ages. He is now an accounts adviser for a bank.

Luscombe, Jenny -
Aged 63, Jenny is Mave’s younger sister. She lives an unassuming life in a stone cottage in the small town of Widow’s Elbow, near Kendall (in the Lake District). She enjoys weaving on her loom and sitting on her veranda sewing and watching the sun go down over the blue hills. Makes coffee out of goat droppings and gives it to visitors.

National Bird & Wildlife League, The -
The front organisation for the Twitchers' Nest. O'Gough probably devised this name to give the twitchers an identity for the benefit of the media and Channel Z Television, while their (fake) kidnap negotiations are in progress.

National Youth Jazz Band, The -
Who Hetty is supposed to be on tour with, in Sweden and Norway - at least that's what she's told her parents. I don't think mine would have believed me (although I don't play jazz anyway). She's told me her parents were hippies in the seventies, and still use words like 'far out', 'transcendental', and 'interstellar' when she rings them. How annoying for her!

O’Gough, Aubrey -
You know all about Aubrey, I think. For the record he is a distinguished television author, writer of such landmark series as 'The Maurice Protocol', 'Laura's Opposal', 'Renfrewshire Dialogues' and 'Orders from Tewkesbury'. He is a regular on the after-dinner speaking circuit and, of course sir, your lifelong enemy.

Parker, Bradley -
Mave's overweight son. He is in on the kidnapping and has already boasted about how much money it's going to make him. He is unable to comprehend simple word games like 'Boggle'. Prior to becoming caught up in the kidnapping saga has worked intermittently as a modern day itinerent chimney sweep. Had to change his business plan earlier this year when his only extendable brush wouldn't de-extend and, unbeknown to the customer, he had to leave it stuck halfway up their chimney shaft.

Parker, Stan -
Mave's husband. Aged 70, I think Stan worked in the car trade. He married Mave in 1952 in a simple ceremony. His favourite biscuits are rich tea. He dunks them in his tea and waits till they're soft before eating them because (as I've heard him state on several occasions) 'it saves me aving to put me teef in first, dunnit, eh?'

Pirate, Billy the -
Owner of Willy’s Tattoo Arena. A friend or 'associate' of Rodney Clambake. I don't know much about him as I have not visited his tattoo 'arena'.

Plum, Bjorn -
The 83 year-old senior partner in the 'Plum, Plum and Corvell' investment house. A swede, Plum has a ruthless eye for a deal. Little known fact: he let his younger brother join the firm as a partner as a favour to his dying father, Harald.

Plum, Hon. George -
Bjorn’s younger brother (aged 78), and only member of the Plum family to have married an English wife. He married Stephanie in Littehampton in 1964.

Priory, Dr.Gordon -
ENT consultant at the William the Conqueror Memorial Hospital. Used to regularly attend barbecues at the Macintyre family home, along with his wife Ginny. They don't go so often now. He told me that they can't stand the tension between Michael and Ellen. Also they have recently both become vegetarian.

Roberts, Hester (Hetty) -
Hetty is from Cumbria and has been working as part of the Twitchers Nest since April '01. I met her on a recent trip to the Lake District, when she quite unexpectedly defected over to our side. She now acts as a double agent, sending me information about the twitchers and their intentions regarding the kidnapping of Mave Parker. I will pass on any information straight to you, Sir Art.

Hetty is 18 and normally lives with her parents. They think that she's on an extended tour of Scandinvaia with the National Youth Jazz Band (she plays the trumpet). Hetty is very knowledgeable about local flora and fauna, and also the stars.

Robertson, Eric -
Martin’s handyman/gardener. Has worked for Martin and Eileen for the last 13 years.

Smith, Geoff -
Head of PDT Broadcasting Inc. Was recommended for a Knighthood last year but turned down.

Sturgeon, Prestwich -
Connected to Aubrey O'Gough's nefarious activities. May not be his real name.

Tideswell, Mr.Eric -
My landlord. He was really good about it when I couldn't pay my rent earlier this year (although I think he would have evicted me in the end, 'cos he's not that nice!) He owns several properties in this area. My flat is quite nice and I have a small garden of my own. It's overlooked by flats above, but the people who live upstairs are quite elderly and wear very thick glasses so I doubt they're that bothered about what's going on in my garden. Not that anything does go on in it!

My flat's in Bakersfield so I can easily walk into Shepherdsfield, it takes about twenty minutes. It's easier getting to Shepherdsfield than it was to Milford when I worked at Channel Z TV anyway.

Wool, James -
Magistrate and friend of Jenny Luscombe. Has been married to Mrs Wool for nearly forty years. Lives in the village of Widow's Elbow. He is a celebrated cattle farmer and also tourist board representative and part-time town crier.
