Without a possessive apostrophe the word 'creatures' could be taken to be plural (more than one 'creature'), which then wouldn’t make sense in the sentence, because the first word 'This …' is only used before singular words ('These' would be used before plural words, e.g. 'This creature' and 'These creatures').
